The Adam Smith Society at the University of Tampa:

The Adam Smith Society is a College of Business honors society for students of both economics and economic policy.  Students are individually nominated for membership by Economics faculty.  Student members are selected based on both an interest and general competence in the economic way of thinking.  The charge of this faculty mentored student organization is to expose the student members to what economists do in the real world, to introduce them to the different points of view from the leagues of professional economists in the marketplace, and to encourage enriched interaction between students, faculty, and community leaders all whom share an interest in real world economics.

In application we typically (each year):
  • Travel with the students to Washington D.C. for a "field visit" with working, professional economists.
  • Travel with students to local (middle-Florida OR Tampa Bay) businesses or regulatory offices to see how specific needs are addressed in "the field" by real decision makers, discuss the realities of entrepreneurial endeavors in our local market place, and come to better understand the application of governance through regulation to address very specific "real world" applications.
    • Pictures of our April 2008 trip to a St. Pete winery are located on Flickr here.
  • Organize and participate in an annual Fall  "Economics after College" mixer where faculty discuss graduate school, law school, work in government, work for private enterprise, and (typically) listen to a "keynote" talk about the economy.
  • Bring in invited speakers to expose the student population to areas of research not represented in the Department of Economics at the University of Tampa OR to introduce UT students to professional decision makers who use economics in their day-to-day work.
